Remedies for dandruff

Getting rid of dandruff, the natural way.

First, dandruff can be caused from different issues.  It can be caused from internal problems or external problems.

Internal problems causing dandruff: hormonal imbalance, dietary issues, poor health, stress and external problems can be poor hygiene, using too much product on your hair, over drying your hair, using heated curlers, not shampooing enough, or fungus in or on the body.

Apple Cider vinegar:  Mix 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and 1/2 cup water and put in spray bottle and  spritz on hair and scalp.  Make sure you DO NOT spray the ears or eyes.  Wrap your hair in a towel. Use once to twice a week for as long as needed.

Onion Juice:  How to Make Onion Juice (

There are 3 Ways You Can Make Onion Juice:

  • Juicer- If you have a juicer, this is the easiest way to make onion juice. Just peel the onion, cut it in half and put it in the juicer.
  • Blender/Food Processor- Peel the onion and cut it into about 4 sections, then put them into your blender or food processor and start blending. Lastly, strain the mixture so that only the juice is remaining.
  • Grater – Peel the onion and cut it in half. Grate both halves of the onion over a dish and then strain the mixture to get just the juice.

How to Use Onion Juice for Hair

  • For the first application of onion juice, you may want to test it on a small area (in case you may be allergic to it) or water down the mixture. Even though it’s natural, pure onion juice is strong.
  • Apply the onion juice daily to your scalp and lightly massage it in, this helps stimulate the hair follicles and allows for maximum absorption.
  • Leave the onion Juice on for about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Eww! The smell is powerful, but the results may be worth it! To avoid smelling like onion all day, you can apply it at night and then wash it out before you go to bed.
If you’re allergic to onions or are looking for another option, another common remedy for thinning hair is ginseng.

Hibiscus Leaves:  Home made Hisbiscus Hair oil: the flowers and dried leaves are boiled in coconut or gingelly oil with fenugreek seeds and then applied to the hair. About 10 flowers or a handful of dried leaves can be used for about 150-200 ml of oil.
Natural Hibiscus Shampoo:  Natural dyes are also prepared from extracts of the flower. The leaves and flowers are mucilaginous and condition the hair . They can be ground with soaked fenugreek seeds and applied to the hair for a cooling effect and to reduce dandruff and hairfall. (

Rosemary leaves:  I found a recipe for this at

Neem leaves:   Grind a few Neem leaves and make a fine paste and apply it to your dry scalp.  Leave it on for about 45 minutes to an hour.  Wrap your hair.  Afterwards wash out with warm water.  Do this until the dandruff is gone.  Try doing it once or twice a week.

Aloe Vera:  Use Aloe Vera juice and pour directly on scalp and hair and massage your scalp and hair.  Let it sit in your hair for about 30-40 minutes before your shower.  Put a shower cap on to keep the Aloe Vera juice on your hair and scalp and then wash with a gently shampoo.  Do this one to two times a week until dandruff is gone.

Olive Oil:  You are going to want to leave this on overnight and have your hair wrapped in a towel or shower cap.  Use 8-10 drops of olive oil and massage in your hands and then run through your hair into the scalp. Put your shower cap on and wrap your hair in a towel.  In the morning, wash with a mild shampoo and then rinse thoroughly. You need around 8-10 hours of your hair wrapped with the oil rubbed into the scalp. Do this once or twice a week for as long as needed.

Fenugreek seeds: Soak two tablespoons in water over night.  In the morning grind the seeds into a fine paste and apply to scalp. Leave on for about 1/2 hour and then rinse with the water the seeds soaked in.  Do this once or twice a week for as long as needed.

Lime Juice:  Lime juice & olive oil – Mix 1 tablespoon of olive oil with 1 tablespoon of lemon or lime juice. Apply this mixture to your hair and scalp, wrap a towel around it and leave it overnight. The next morning rinse and wash everything out.

Coconut Oil:  Kills fungus on the head.  Massage coconut into our hair, comb through, massage again and let it set for at least 30 minutes with plastic wrap wrapped around the hair. If you can it is best to leave on over night for at least 8 hours. Wash in the morning with a gentle shampoo. Do this once or twice a week for as long as needed.
